¿WHO WILL EMERGE AS THE ALPHA OF NEXT SEASON’S INDIANA MEN’S BASKETBALL PACK?

WRITTEN + EDITED BY JORDYN BONTRAGER

While the entire basketball state of Indiana is actively 100% fixated on the Pacers as they play for all the marbles in tonight’s next case of the greatest event in competitive sports (GAME 7), we cannot help but to daydream a bit about the Pacer organization’s younger brother over in Bloomington.

It was yet another year of disappointment for the boys in B-Town in ‘24-’25, and that downfall was once again followed by an impressive overall roster overhaul. This time around, that reconstruction included a new head coaching infusion as the program punted on it’s prior trust for Woody. With the onboarding of Darian DeVries at the helm, this club closed one chapter while opening the next in it’s rich tradition of basketball success.

DeVries arrives at Indiana with a progressively improving track record (7 seasons x 169-68 record [.713 W%] x 3 NCAA tourney appearances). After the recent addition of Serbian sharpshooter Aleksa Ristic, the new Hoosier skipper’s inaugural offseason is nearly complete. The cream and crimson now have 12 scholarships allocated for next SZN, and will likely hang onto hope that at least one of Luke Goode/Anthony Leal wins their appeal to return for a 5th season.

As they await the outcome of that process, here is a look at the projected 12-man rotation as of today:

PG | Tayton Conerway, Conor Enright

SG | Lamar Wilkerson, Anthony Leal, Jason Drake, Aleksa Ristic

SF | Tucker DeVries, Nick Dorn

PF | Luke Goode, Jasai Miles, Trent Sisley

C | Reed Bailey, Sam Alexis, Josh Harris

While there is no questioning the impressive amount of talent reflected above on paper, none of these guys (aside from DeVries x Enright AND Miles x Harris) have played together previously. This squad is legitimately completely different than last season’s, with every single member of the former version exhausting their NCAA eligibility (Goode x Leal pending…) and/or transferring elsewhere (aside from returning walk-ons Jordan Rayford x Ian Stephens).

Early social media snippets of the team’s summer workouts yield positive vibes as it pertains to what is to come. However, there is no proven scientific method for fully forecasting how these type of experiments will transpire.

Needless to say, the Hoosiers new shot-caller already has a pile of pressure on him to produce wins for a fanbase that demands nothing less. Factor in the previous notes regarding this fully refreshed set of personnel, and it is clear that Darian DeVries will have his work cut out when it comes to putting all of the puzzle pieces together properly. It is the responsibility of the guys on the court to execute the gameplan, but it does not matter if they check that box on a nightly basis if the guys on the sidelines are drawing up gameplans which do not translate to W’s.

With those things being stated, commander DeVries is going to need one of his soldiers to distinguish themselves as the alpha of this year’s perennial wolf pack. A team can only go as far as their head coach guides them off the court AND their leader navigates them on the court.

The most obvious candidate for that position is the coach’s son: Money Tuck. The legacy bid has been downright dominant on both ends thus far in his collegiate career and should have an extra layer of motivation to make big things happen after missing all but 8 games last season due to a shoulder setback.

There is also no denying the serious case for the reigning Sun Belt Player of the year: Tayton Conerway. The top shelf floor general is among the nation’s most complete point guards in terms the impact he has on both sides of the court. Conerway’s pestilent defense is particularly proficient, with his 2.9 SPG slotting in as the country’s 3rd highest nightly swipe rate last SZN. After competing in this summer’s NBA draft combine festivities, the Troy transfer is knocking on the door of his ultimate aspirations. Another year of powerful point of attack D x crafty table-setting could catapult him all the way into the 1st-Round discussion.

Stephen Curry is ALWAYS going to be the first name that comes to mind when you think of Davidson basketball, but do not sleep on the mark that the newest member of the ‘B-Town Big Boys Club’ Reed Bailey had on his former program. There is a real argument that Bailey is fresh off the basketball season ever turned in by a Wildcats big fella, and follows an expanding line of BIG footsteps that have made their enormous presences felt within the walls of Assembly Hall.

Then there is Lamar Wilkerson, who dropped a silently efficient 18 points on IU in last December’s clash with his old school Sam Houston. Wilkerson is an all caps FLAMETHROWER, coming in as the country’s #6 rated shooter in terms of 3-point splashes per game (3.4) and #7 in terms of efficiency (44.5%) across 32 games last SZN. Dude is a bucket, and should compose the steady sounds of string music for the Assembly Hall chorus to enjoy.

Obviously, there are other gentlemen on this team who could feasibly arise as the top dog. But this quartet is clearly the most talented of B-Town’s new bunch, and much of the program’s success next season is directly tied to their performance. Ultimately, it does not matter which of these dudes rises to the occasion and claims their place at the top of the revised Hoosier hierarchy, but in order for Indiana to get THE JOB done it will be vital for one of them to accept the challenges that come with leading a pack.

¿Who will it be?
